This chapter acknowledges the current dearth of direct evidence of student learning and discusses the limited value academic and co-curricular transcripts (CCTs) provided to students, educators, and employers.

This chapter studies the myriad outlets in which students acquire useful academic and non-academic skills outside of the grade point system. Disadvantages in the arbitration and secular nature of the common transcript are also addressed.

Exploring and responding to the concerns from a diverse chorus of higher education constituents and calls for increased accountability and improved student learning in higher education, this chapter proposes the development of an outcomes-based CCT, as an extension of the traditional CCT, to take advantage of the rich and numerous learning opportunities within the living laboratory of co-curricular experiences where students repeatedly demonstrate and hone their skills and competencies throughout their collegiate experience.

The chapter discusses a number of examples and models of what such a program might look like and provides insights and suggestions as to how it could be implemented thoughtfully and effectively. It also explores several of the benefits and challenges associated with implementing an outcomes-based CCT.

Considers how mentoring could be used to help accountants make international assignments into successful learning experiences and to cope with the culture shock they often report. Discusses the possible role of the mentor before, during and after the assignment, highlighting the critical factors during the process; and compares horizontal and vertical approaches. Urges accounting firms to use mentoring to improve international performance and as a basis for organizational learning in a global environment.

In the middle of last month Mr. Victor Feather, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, spoke at some length to the Institution of Production Engineers about human relations in industry. Within a day or so, in the firm's newspaper, Mr. George Turnbull, managing director of the newly‐organized Austin Morris and Manufacturing Group, was stressing the need for better relations between management and workers. In November the Duke of Edinburgh will be principal speaker at an Industrial Society conference on Involvement at Work and, most exceptionally, will answer questions.

Deployment of optimal size of resources is a key issue in repetitive construction projects. This paper describes a simulation model based on queuing theory for the resource scheduling of a real repetitive housing project involving 320 dwelling units constructed in East Delhi, India. The optimal size of resources, defined as the minimum size required to keep the project duration a minimum, has been identified from the results of a series of sensitivity analyses in which the size of the resources was varied one at a time. The duration of the project, the period of utilization of the resources, and the queue length of activities waiting for service are also reported in this paper. It has been shown that reduction in size of resources is achievable without increasing the duration of the project and queue length of activities. Increase in the size of some specialised crews is also proved advantageous.

MOMENTOUS days for work study. The footwear industry have recently recognised work study as a basis for rate‐setting on the one hand. And on the other, the Productivity Council of British Railways announces that work study is to be applied.

IT would be quite refreshing to have an open breeze blowing through the ranks of work study technicians these days. Away with the ponderous exponents of the mystic art and, instead, finding the experts telling the workers how easy work study really is if only you sit down and think about it. It has, of course, many difficult and complex aspects but let us not confuse the issue, since these aspects can be left to the professionals' — after all that is what they get paid for — sorting out and providing solutions to the problems!

ELEVEN YEARS have passed, we were reminded at the Hague Congress last month, since a handful of people met a few kilometres away and agreed to bring together all concerned with work study through the medium of a European Federation. The tenth assembly of that body gave at least one member of that original group an opportunity to consider the present position.

ELEVEN years ago a small group, of whom the writer was one, met in Oud Poelgeest Castle in Holland to consider forming a European body concerned with Work Study. They share a sense of pride that the Federation which emerged will celebrate its decennary next month. Sadly, of the four British members of that group only two survive to greet the event.
